Nathan Cowan runs Billson's Brewery in the historic town of Beechworth. He shares some of his favourite spots in Beechworth and its spectacular surrounds with us.
1. Woolshed Falls
A 10-minute drive from Beechworth, Woolshed Falls is the first place Nathan and his wife Felicity like to bring visitors from Melbourne. The beautiful cascades are a must-see, and are particularly impressive after heavy falls.
2. Mount Pilot
Nathan and Felicity love to round up a group of friends and walk to the summit of Mount Pilot for a relaxed picnic. Nothing beats the uninterrupted 360-degree views, which are particularly pretty around sunset.
3. Mt Buffalo National Park
This all-seasons playground has more than 90 kilometres of walking tracks to explore. 'It's a hiker and photographer's paradise,' Nathan says, with panoramic scenery, cascading waterfalls, and wildflowers in warmer months.
4. Lake Sambell
Nathan and Felicity take weekly walks around this picturesque lake close to the centre of Beechworth. It's a perfect place to relax and unwind. Come for a splash in the water, a lake-side picnic and a rejuvenating wander.
5. Beechworth Gorge Scenic Walk
While Beechworth is known for its heritage architecture, the surrounding landscape is just as lovely, with dramatic granite tors, native woodlands, cascading falls, tranquil rock pools and colourful wildflowers. Nathan recommends the Beechworth Gorge walking trail for the beautiful scenery and epic views over the town.
6. Falls Creek
Although this stunning alpine resort provides adventure year-round, for Nathan it's the ultimate winter escape, and is popular among skiers and snowboarders. Nathan and Felicity recommend zooming around on a snowmobile for a little extra fun.
7. Burke Museum
Named after ill-fated explorer Robert O'Hara Burke, this museum is home to more than 30,000 items collected from the area. The collection provides unique insights into Beechworth, including Billson's own history. Keep an eye out for a special display of some of the 150-year-old brewery's oldest bottles.
8. Old Beechworth Gaol
This historic gaol is one of Australia's most significant post-European cultural sites. Nathan recommends jumping on a tour to hear some of Beechworth's most captivating stories.
9. Eldorado Dredge
One of the largest dredges in the Southern Hemisphere, this impressive piece of machinery was used to extract 70,664 ounces of gold from Reedy Creek. It's an easy one-hour walk from the centre of Beechworth and, according to Nathan, a must-see when visiting the town.
